Gael Greene once said:

Great food is like great sex. The more you have the more you want.

Who doesn’t want either of that?! Today we’ll just focus on food though. Delicious food that we found at vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Gothenburg, Sweden, to be precise.

During our stay in Gothenburg, we’ve had the pleasure to eat at a few great vegan restaurants, food trucks and a kind of snack-bar I think best describes it. We’ve come across some real gems!

Not only are the types of food so dissimilar in each of them, the establishments themselves are too. Therefor we did not try to rank them, but rather selected our top 5.

Each of them has its own unique atmosphere, and excels for different occasions. If you’re in a rush, you can quickly stop by a food truck. When taking the night off with your loved one on the other hand, there are restaurants on our list to relax and enjoy.

Without further ado, here is our top five of best vegan restaurants in Gothenburg!

Blackbird

Blackbird offers something we hadn’t seen before. It’s a fully vegan restaurant! Everything on their menu is plant-based.

On the door of the restaurant, Vegankök & bar was written. It made us think – with our faulty Swedish – that it might just be a vegan restaurant. Just before we went in though, we saw on a menu that one of their starters included cheese, so we were a bit weary.

The bartender kindly welcomed us when we stepped in and showed us to our table. After we were seated, we just had to ask wether or not the restaurant was indeed completely vegan. Luckily, she answered: “Yes! We do have some cheese written on our menu, but that’s homemade non-dairy cheese made by our chef.” Our hearts made a little jump.

When we visit Dutch restaurants, the menu is usually filled with cheese, cheese, and more cheese… Finding a fully vegan restaurant is just one of the most awesome things!

Blackbird has a very unique atmosphere. It certainly is not like your classy five star restaurant. It leans more towards an alternative pub. You also have to order your food and drinks at the bar rather than you usually would with a waitress whilst seated at your table.

The vibe might not suit everyone, but if you like good vegan food, we’d certainly recommend visiting this place regardless of your style. The Blackbird menu is filled with just the most lovely and diverse vegan dishes; including starters and desserts!

Planet Vega

A restaurant in a shipping container! We have to say, we just love the concept of foodtrucks. And these ‘foodcontainers’ just fit perfectly in this street. We like the look of them, but mainly love their simplicity and how little space they take up.

Planet Vega is conveniently located in a park next to the Saluhallen. Before you see their ‘foodcontainer’, you’ll have already heard their happy upbeat music in the distance. Three young guys are in charge and we could just feel their passion for what they did.

As the national Swedish holiday took place when we visited Gothenburg, they served a ‘Nationaldags Buddha bowl’. This bowl was filled with traditional Swedish delicacies and tasted absolutely fabulous. It’s just an amazing way for tourists to get a sneak peak into the Swedish kitchen. But also for the locals that enjoy the food of their country, of course!

Besides bowls (that change all the time), these guys also offered a vegan burger (which looked fab), and a small side dish for when you just need a little something to keep you going.

We haven’t yet even mentioned one of the most important things. They serve their bowls in biodegradable plates, combined with biodegradable cutlery! When we mentioned that we didn’t need drinks with our food because had a reusable water bottle on us, they even offered to fill it up for free! It is always great to meet some folks that have joined the battle against plastic waste on our planet.

What’s not love about Vega Planet? Great food, awesome people, and a zero waste focus. This place ticks all our boxes.

Brewer’s Beer Bar

Brewer’s Beer Bar is perfect for mixed companies. They offer traditional meat- and dairy based dishes. For those following a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle though, they have the most unique and delicious vegan alternatives.

And the best part? They serve vegan pizzas! Who doesn’t love pizza!?

After we decided to limit our dairy intake, pizzas were the first on our chopping bord to exclude. But that moment, when you find a restaurant that offers vegan pizzas, that’s just bliss We just had to give it a try! These pizzas were not just vegan, but even had a sourdough base.

The staff was just as great as the food they served. Our waiter immediately brought a bowl of water for the dogs, and when they saw that we were sitting in the sun, they offered to roll down one of their sunscreens.

Besides pizzas, Brewers Beer Bar also has other vegetarian and vegan alternative dishes on their menu. Those include chickpea and tempeh kebab, as well as chocolate mousse.

You can also just drop by for a drink after work, or in the evenings to relax. As the name of the restaurant suggests, they carry a wide variety of the most delicious specialty beers.

Jonsborgs grill

Everyone who’s ever visited our home country must have encountered the Dutch obsessions of ‘snack-bars’. There’s at least one, but usually more, in just about every village of the country.

Their vegan options are usually non-existent. But times are changing, and we’ve discovered a nice little vegan snack-bar in Gothenborg! Even for vegans, fast-food is becoming more and more abundantly available.

Jonsborgs grill serve vegan burgers with a variety of toppings, and a selection of vegan sausages such as bratwurst and chorizo sausage. No snack-bar would be complete without some french fries. This place serves the regular kind as well as sweet potato fries!

Although it’s not the healthiest thing to eat, a burger is tasty every once in a while when strolling through a large city. The long opening hours at Jonsborgs grill also make that it’s a great stop for those late night snacks during a night in town!

We didn’t try the sausages as they were out of stock when we stopped by, but the burgers were great. The ones we tried were very different, so there should be something there to serve everyone’s taste!

Not vegan? No issue. There are meat-based options, too!

Jinx Food Truck

The last, but certainly not least on our list, is Jinx Food Truck. Finally, a real food truck! This truck is located on a small square in a busy shopping street. On Saturdays, the adjacent shops even hold a market, creating a lovely sociable atmosphere.

Their vegan option is limited to being just one of their three dishes, but it tastes fabulous. Instead of your usual burger, they serve soft buns folded around a fried breaded piece of tofu that is surrounded by a bunch of lovely toppings.

We’d never eaten tofu that had such a great taste and texture. Have you avoided eating tofu because it wasn’t as tasty when you first tried it? The food served at Jinx Food Truck will definitely surprise you!

This is another one of those places that is great to get a bite to eat when joined by mixed company. If you’re having difficulty finding a spot that serves a quick lunch for any audience, this will be a perfect go-to place.

    1. Doesn’t it? Some of these restaurants (or trucks) had amazing vegetarian or regular food, too. Everything looked delicious. Would definitely recommend Brewers Beer Bar for mixed companies!
