Today, Mojo is celebrating her third birthday already, time flies! So we thought it would be only fitting to share a recipe for her birthday ‘cake’ in an extra blog post!
A different take on the birthday cake
As you may know from reading our previous blog posts on the prey model raw diet, or on the recipe for dehydrated treats, Mojo is raw fed. She eats a balanced meat based raw diet because this is healthy and species appropriate.
When her birthday comes around we like to celebrate with something special, but we don’t spoil her with the usual pupcake. We never use ingredients like flour and oats because they are not great for our four legged friends. Mojo is very sensitive to these food types so we exclude them from her diet completely.
All recipes we can find on pinterest though, involve baking an actual cake with ingredients usually used in human food, and that’s not something we would serve Mojo nor would we want for you to feed it to your dog.
Healthy food can be just as tasty
An unhealthy treat once a year isn’t the worst thing in the world, and we ourselves do eat a slice of cake once in a blue moon. However, dogs actually tend to prefer the taste of protein and fat, so a meat based ‘cake’ is a treat for them!
If you want to feed an unhealthy meal once a year and bake a pupcake, that’s totally up to you. We personally keep every item that Mojo eats fresh, unprocessed, and meat based. Today’s birthday cake is hence raw, and mainly includes meat.
Although Mojo doesn’t usually get fruit and vegetables because her diet is balanced without them, today’s birthday cake does include some berries. These are high in antioxidants and perfectly safe to feed, and Mojo loves the taste!
We also added some coconut oil to decorate the cake, it works as a perfect icing as it turns solid and white at cooler temperatures! Coconut oil is not something we usually incorporate in Mojo’s diet as it does not contain omega 3 fatty acids and it’s a plant based fat that dogs wouldn’t naturally find in the wild. Fish oil or krill oil would be healthier but we don’t have it at home and it doesn’t turn into a white icing like coconut oil does.
Additionally, we added some dehydrated sprats for an extra crunch. Mojo ate a few whilst we decorated the cake, she really likes them!
